Welcome Back to Teen Speak!

Words/expressions of the week : "Bet, Don't Trip and Bad"

Lisa was a middle-aged mother of two teenage boys, Jake and Max. She loved her boys dearly, but sometimes, she couldn't help feeling out of touch with the younger generation. She needed help to keep up with their slang words and phrases. She often nodded along when they spoke, pretending to understand what they were saying.

One day, she overheard her boys talking to their friends about their plans for the weekend. They were discussing a trip to the mall, and Jake said, "We'll meet at the food court at noon, bet?" Max replied, "Bet." Lisa had no idea what they were talking about. She wanted to avoid appearing uncool in front of her sons, so she researched.

She quickly learned that "bet" was used to confirm plans, something like saying "okay" or "sounds good." She also knew that "bad" meant "good," and "fam" was a slang term for friends. With her new knowledge, Lisa was ready to impress her sons with her newfound slang skills.

Jake and Max came home from school the next day and started talking about their day. Lisa listened carefully and waited for the right moment to use her new slang words. When they mentioned meeting their friends after school, Lisa said, "Bet. Don't trip, boys. Have fun with your fam." Jake and Max looked at her in surprise, then burst out laughing.

Lisa was confused. Had she misused the words? But then her sons explained that it was funny to hear their mom using their slang words. They were impressed that she had taken the time to learn their language. From that day on, Lisa felt more connected to her sons. She still didn't always use slang words, but when she did, it was always met with laughter and appreciation.
